Dextr AI, a hospitality-focused artificial intelligence startup, raised $6.7 million in seed funding led by Elevation Capital with participation from Foundation Capital. The startup plans to expand across global hospitality markets with India as a key focus. For founders building in public, the story is instructive — Dextr's traction came from a founder deeply embedded in the hospitality community, sharing problems and insights long before the product was ready. The audience came first. The funding followed. → YourStory |

Entrepreneurship news for September 2026 points to a blunt reality for founders: ideas are abundant, while evidence of real demand remains scarce. Founders can produce polished decks, AI-written plans, and impressive mock-ups in a weekend, yet many still postpone the one activity that matters most — asking real people to commit time, money, data, or access. Building in public is one of the most direct ways to generate that evidence publicly — because every engagement, every reply, and every share is visible proof that real people care about the problem you are solving. → Mean CEO |

There is a counterintuitive truth about marketing that most founders discover too late. The most powerful audience you will ever have is not the one you buy with an advertising budget. It is the one that watched you build — that followed the journey, understood the problem, and arrived at your launch already invested in your success. |
Building in public is the practice of sharing your startup journey openly — the progress, the setbacks, the decisions, the numbers — as you build. It is one of the most underused growth strategies available to an early-stage founder. And in a world where attention is expensive and trust is scarce, it is one of the most valuable. |
What Building in Public Actually Means |
Building in public does not mean sharing everything. It does not mean broadcasting your investor conversations, your internal conflicts, or your financial vulnerabilities to the world. |
It means sharing the process in a way that is genuinely useful to the people watching — the decisions you are making and why, the lessons you are learning from what is not working, the milestones that matter and what it took to reach them. It means treating your audience not as customers to be marketed to but as people who are on the journey alongside you. |
Done well, it creates something that no advertising budget can replicate: a group of people who feel personally connected to what you are building, who root for your success, and who share your story with others not because they were incentivized to but because they genuinely care. |
Why It Works When Traditional Marketing Does Not |
Traditional marketing asks strangers to trust you. It interrupts people who did not ask to hear from you and asks them to believe claims you are making about yourself. The conversion rates are low because the trust is thin. |
Building in public inverts this entirely. Instead of interrupting strangers, you attract people who share your curiosity about the problem you are solving. Instead of making claims, you demonstrate them over time through consistent, honest sharing. Instead of asking for trust upfront, you earn it gradually through every post, every update, and every moment of honesty about what is hard. |
By the time you have something to sell, the people who have been following your journey are not strangers evaluating an unknown product. They are people who already believe in what you are building — who have been watching you solve the problem they recognize, with a consistency that signals you are genuinely committed to it. |
That is a fundamentally different starting point for any commercial conversation. |
The Three Things Worth Sharing |
Not everything about your journey is interesting to an audience. The content that builds the most engaged following tends to cluster around three themes. |
The problem, not just the product. The most compelling building-in-public content is not about features. It is about the problem — why it matters, how it shows up in real people's lives, and what it feels like to be the person experiencing it every day. When you write or talk about the problem with specificity and empathy, you attract exactly the people who have that problem — and those are precisely the people who become your first customers. |
The honest lessons from what is not working. The content that travels furthest in building-in-public communities is almost never the success announcement. It is the honest post-mortem — the campaign that failed, the feature nobody used, the assumption that turned out to be wrong. Vulnerability is not a liability in public building. It is the thing that makes your journey feel real rather than curated — and real is what generates trust. |
The milestones with the numbers behind them. Specific numbers — your first ten users, your first dollar of revenue, your first month of positive retention — are far more compelling than vague progress updates. They give your audience something concrete to celebrate alongside you, and they signal that this is a real business being built, not a project that exists only in a presentation. |
Where to Do It |
The platform matters less than the consistency. The founders who build the largest audiences through building in public are not the ones who picked the perfect channel. They are the ones who showed up regularly — weekly at minimum — on a single platform where their target customer already spends time. |
LinkedIn works best when your customer is a professional or a business. X works best when your customer is in the technology, startup, or finance space. Substack or a personal newsletter works best when you want to build a deeper relationship with a smaller, more engaged audience over time. TikTok and YouTube work best when the product itself benefits from being seen — when showing is more powerful than telling. |
The mistake most founders make is spreading across all of them simultaneously and building depth on none. One platform, consistent presence, and genuine content beats five platforms updated sporadically every time. |
The Compounding Effect Nobody Talks About |
The most underappreciated property of building in public is that it compounds in ways that paid marketing cannot. |
A post you write today does not disappear when you stop paying for it. It exists permanently — findable by anyone searching for the problem you are solving, shareable by anyone who finds it useful, and cumulative in the picture it builds of your credibility and commitment over time. The founder who has been building in public for twelve months has an archive of genuine signal that tells any potential customer, investor, or partner everything they need to know about whether this person is serious. |
Paid advertising stops working the moment you stop paying. An audience built through honest, consistent sharing keeps growing even when you are not actively posting — because the content is already there, the trust is already established, and the community that formed around the journey continues to refer new people in. |

Managing customer relations can be a significant challenge for businesses of all sizes. Keeping track of customer interactions, preferences, and purchase history can become overwhelming, leading to missed opportunities and unsatisfied customers. A potential startup idea could be to develop a comprehensive CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software that integrates seamlessly with various communication channels, such as email, social media, phone calls, and in-person interactions. This CRM system could provide real-time updates, personalized recommendations, and automated processes to streamline customer interactions and improve overall satisfaction. By offering a user-friendly interface and customizable features, businesses could enhance their customer service, increase sales, and build long-lasting relationships with their customers. |
