The right answer is specific. It names a real person with a real job, a real problem, and a real reason to care today. A freelance designer who invoices more than ten clients a month and spends Friday afternoons chasing payments. A restaurant owner with two locations who manages staff schedules in a WhatsApp group because nothing else has worked. A first-time founder who has never hired anyone and does not know where to start. |
When you can describe your customer that specifically, everything else in marketing becomes easier. You know which platforms they use. You know what language resonates with them. You know what fears hold them back and what outcomes they are genuinely hoping for. And you know — precisely — what you need to say to make them feel understood enough to take the next step. |
The Three Marketing Approaches That Actually Work Early |
There is no universal marketing playbook for early-stage startups. The right approach depends entirely on who your customer is and how they make decisions. But there are three approaches that consistently work at the earliest stage — before you have a big budget, a large team, or an established brand. |
Go where your customers already are. Every specific customer lives somewhere online or offline where they gather, talk, and share information. A Slack community. A LinkedIn group. A subreddit. An industry conference. A local business association. The most efficient early marketing is showing up in those spaces — not to sell, but to be genuinely useful. Answer questions. Share knowledge. Build a reputation for understanding the problem better than anyone else in the room. When people who need what you offer associate your name with expertise and trust, selling becomes significantly easier. |
Let your existing customers do the marketing for you. Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing channel available to any early-stage startup — and it costs nothing except building a product that is genuinely worth talking about. The founders who generate consistent word of mouth are not the ones with the cleverest referral programmes. They are the ones who made their early customers feel so well-served that sharing the product with a colleague felt like doing that colleague a favor. Make your product shareable not through incentives but through quality — and then make it easy for happy customers to share with a direct link, a referral mechanism, or simply a product that is so clearly useful it invites conversation. |
Create content that finds your customer before they find you. When someone types a question into Google or a search bar that relates to the problem your product solves, the founders who appear in that moment have a marketing advantage that compounds for years. A blog post, a video, a case study, a guide — any content that genuinely answers a question your customer is already asking is a permanent asset. It does not expire. It does not require ongoing spend. And it arrives at exactly the right moment — when someone is actively searching for the solution you offer. Starting this early, even imperfectly, builds an asset that more expensive channels cannot replicate. |
The Message That Actually Moves People |
Most startup marketing fails not because it reaches the wrong people, but because it says the wrong thing to the right ones. |
The default founder instinct is to describe the product — what it does, how it works, what features it has. Customers do not make decisions based on features. They make decisions based on how a product makes them feel about their own situation — whether it understands their problem, whether it fits their world, and whether the outcome it promises is worth the risk of trying something new. |
The message that moves people does three things. It names the problem in language the customer already uses to describe it to themselves — not your language, theirs. It makes the outcome vivid and specific — not "save time" but "close your invoices on Friday instead of chasing them on Monday." And it removes the biggest objection before the customer has the chance to raise it — whether that is price, complexity, or the fear of switching from what they already use. |
The test for whether your message is working is simple. Show it to someone who fits your customer profile. If their response is "that is exactly how I feel" — you have the right message. If their response is "that is interesting" — you do not. |
